There are apparently some enhanced security features that are making it difficult or impossible to install some apps and updates. Mail has lost almost all of its customization features - you'd better want to view your inbox in the way that the genius developers at Apple have decided you should. Apple's so-called "improvements" to Mail and iTunes are awful, in my opinion. My Catalina download and install worked flawlessly, and I'm sorry it did because I hate this version.
